Neo X has upgraded its MainNet to v0.4.2, enabling its Anti-MEV feature following a successful deployment on TestNet.
Anti-MEV is designed to prevent block producers from capturing profit by reordering transactions, a practice known as Maximal Extractable Value. It is now active on the network as of block height 3,749,760.
The Neo X Anti-MEV system combines dBFT consensus with cryptographic methods. Enveloped transactions keep details hidden until inclusion in a block, while distributed key generation and threshold decryption ensure that transactions remain encrypted until a quorum of validators decrypts them.
This approach prevents block producers from front-running trades, executing sandwich attacks, or reorganizing blocks to capture value.
Neo founder Da Hongfei noted that MEV is not an unavoidable byproduct of blockchains, but the result of incentives that can be designed differently:
“MEV isn’t inevitable; it’s a choice. Too many treat it as an unavoidable byproduct of blockchains. It is not. MEV is engineered into incentives, and it can be engineered out.”
He argued that eliminating it helps protect users and enhance decentralization.
The launch follows a successful audit of the zero-knowledge DKG protocol that underpins the Anti-MEV system. Additionally, the Neo team has orchestrated a ZK Trust Relay campaign to enhance the robustness of the system’s final parameters.
Developer resources have been made available to support dApp builders interested in testing or deploying Anti-MEV-compatible applications:
- neox-tpke-examples: An end-to-end example for building with Threshold Public Key Encryption on Neo X.
- neox-tpke-lib: The library used in the example, also published as an npm package.
Developers can begin experimenting on TestNet or adapting applications for MainNet by integrating the library and using enveloped transactions to take advantage of Anti-MEV protections.
