Narrative has announced it is shutting down its online content platform that sought to become “the world’s journal.” Effective immediately, no new content, posts, comments, or quality ratings will be accepted on the Narrative platform.
In the announcement, Narrative co-CEO and co-founder, Rosemary O’Neill stated,
It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Narrative.org will begin shut-down, effective immediately.
We’ve poured our hearts, souls, and finances into this project for the last two years, and we still believe in the principles embodied in the Narrative manifesto.
We understand that this announcement will be disappointing to our Narrator community, but rest assured we have exhausted every avenue for continuing. Unfortunately, market events, regulatory uncertainty, and limited resources have forced us to make this hard decision.
Next Steps
Narrative conducted its final reward payout on Thursday, December 5th, and emphasized: “no rewards will be accrued or paid out going forward.”
Users can redeem their NRVE tokens up until 3:00 pm (UTC -5) on Monday, December 30th. Further, there is no longer a minimum token withdrawal restriction.
Any user who has published on the Narrative platform can download their content, via a link in their profile. Content will download in JSON format, which can then convert to other formats (i.e., CSV).
Users can download their content up until 3:00 pm (UTC -5) on Monday, December 30th, 2019. Afterward, O’Neill states, “Narrative.org will cease operations and the site will be unavailable. All member data will be deleted completely on that date as well.”
History of Narrative
In January 2018, Narrative announced that it was switching from the Ethereum blockchain to the Neo blockchain for both its public token sale and integration into its platform. At the time, Narrative stated the switch was due to Ethereum’s transaction bottlenecks, high transaction fees, and unclear enhancement plans.
Narrative’s public token sale began on February 20th, 2018, and concluded on March 29th, 2018, raising an equivalent of US $2.5 million through the sale of its NRVE tokens. Narrative allocated 50% of the genesis tokens to crowdsale participants at 300 NRVE tokens per NEO, 20% to the Narrative team, and earmarked the remaining 30% for marketing.
On the day the public token sale concluded, Narrative launched the alpha version of its platform. In April 2019, the Narrative team released its beta platform through a soft launch and continued to add new features, updating its roadmap along the way.
In September 2019, Narrative claimed it had more than 8,600 members and over 14,000 pieces of published content.
